I had no idea that this documentary existed.
I loved the book when I read it a few years ago. Definitely want to catch this movie.

On Skinny Jeans
5 years of not playing basketball+1.5 years of not climbing a significant number of KU stairs daily=smaller calf muscles.
smaller calf muscles+teaching has made me anorexic+they are offered in every color imaginable=I am riding high on the skinny jean bandwagon today. In purple. :)

I'm dreaming of a blue Christmas.
Dear Kathleen,
It’s really great that you’re the secretary of HHS and everything and that you are showing the world that not everyone in Kansas is as idiotic as Sam Brownback and Fred Phelps, but it would be really nice if you could come back because when you ruled the state, my dad didn’t have to work on Christmas Eve.
Ok, I know that returning is asking too much, so if you...

Revolutionary Educators →
I am currently reading Savage Inequalities and getting really dizzy at the height and breadth and depth of messed-up-ness in education in this country, and it is nice to have all of the successful, currently isolated efforts to rip it up and re-think it (which is what is necessary) gathered into one article.

Dear Hays, KS, I have arrived for the holidays. It has been neither cheap nor easy, however—disappointingly un-American for the All-American city of 1996. Should you want to see me again, I suggest you acquire for yourself a legitimate airport.
Thank you and happy holidays, Kathryn M. Basye

Steak and sauce
As a testament to my debilitating ability (yes, you read that right) to find meaning in anything and everything, I will outline for you an essay I would write if I didn’t have a pounding headache from swinging too hard and too suddenly among candy, coffee, and alcohol in the past few days.
I had a steak tonight
with Heinz 57 sauce,
or I should say I had Heinz 57 sauce with steak.
My...

Even I might be public transported out by the time...
Take the ferry to Vallejo,
Get driven to Napa and then to Sacramento,
Fly to Denver, and
Bus to Hays—
all to avoid a $600+ direct flight.
Oh well, there will be plenty of reading and knitting time.

I have been terribly homesick,
but in the spirit of getting jostled out of my current rut of thought, I remembered why I want to be here:
I went to a Kwanzaa celbration in which, among other things, Samoans traditionally danced.
I went home to where my roommate was having a Hannukah party.
It was generally a colorful, rich day and the essence of exactly what, for all of my 22 years in Kansas, I wanted out of life.

Stopping and thinking
I’ve been riding high lately, as far as the kids go—see the previous few videos to see why. Last night though, I was retelling my day to Michael like no big deal when,
Michael: That is sad.
Me: Why?
I had an IEP meeting today, for that kid who’s just not ever going to “get it. I knew it would be a pretty tense meeting when it took me a few calls to nail Mom down for a...

This is from last week, but it happened when I was sitting down and doing math with one kid who requested to do an extra math problem and I was like, “Whoa, I am sitting down and teaching one kid how to do a math problem. Like, I am sitting down..teaching..one kid. And the rest…are…doing stuff.”
And then I almost passed out because everything became very absurd and distant...

A little slice of my life, if you're interested.
I cannot, for the life of me, decide how to organize my photos.
Should I do it in folders by year, date, month, but mix people and themes? I would know exactly when everything happened. But I could always look at that in the properties of the file. I also keep pretty good track of what’s going on on this, so I can know what went on. Or should I have a folder for each section of my life?...

Michael: ...and I'm terrified for the next generation of leadership. Aren't you terrified?
Me: No.
Michael: You're not?
Me: No, because I live in the moment and never jump to conclusions about the future.
